How to apply for gas meters:
The first and foremost step to apply for gas meters and finally get them installed on your property in NYC, you will need to call the gas-providing company in NYC, which is mostly ConEdison. Ask them to open a profile for you and issue a case number, which will be tracked between the utility company and the national gas company.
The second step is to hire a licensed plumber to take care of the inside portion of the project, including piping and fixtures. It is important to note that the plumber must be registered and licensed, with an active license to begin the job. After the contract and agreements, the plumber must file a certain Filing with ESD (Energy Saving Department) called the MC case, which allows the national gas company and your utility company to connect together, track your project, and finalize it when it is complete.
Two types of contractors can open MC cases with the Energy Saving Department: licensed plumbers and licensed electricians. Both are related to energy resources and government and must be done under direct government supervision. However, in your case, it is better to hire a plumber directly rather than an electrician, as it will save money from hiring another contractor for the rest of the job.
While the plumber is conducting the inside portion of the job, the gas service company must work on the outside portion and make the infrastructure ready to connect to the building.
Once the plumber finishes the job, he or she needs to certify and finalize the case and inform the Energy Saving Department to obtain permission for your gas company to connect the outside pipe to the inside. Congratulations, you now have gas service in your building.
It is worth mentioning that if you do not have any renovation that requires a Department of Buildings (DOB) permit, you do not need to spend money hiring an architect, going through plan examination, and obtaining a DOB construction permit. However, if you need to do permit-required renovation, such as relocating your kitchen, mechanical room, or changing your house footprint, you will need to apply for a DOB permit. It is better to do everything in one shot and protect yourself from additional expenses that you may need to pay in the future to redo or even relocate fixtures.

However, by following these simple steps, you can streamline the process and ensure that everything is done correctly and efficiently.
